Minutes of the CLIC Meeting - 1 September 2003

Agenda:
Status of CARE/ESGARD, Status of CARE/JRA3
Speakers:
Gilbert Guignard, Louis Rinolfi

Guilbert presented the status of CARE/ESGARD.
Abstract:
General results of the evaluation by the EU experts of the FP6 R&D Infrastructure proposals; outlines and results of the CARE project on Accelerator R&D, which was accepted; consequences of the recommendations and funding limitations by the EU Commission and next steps.

Louis presented the status of JRA3 (Joint Research Activity 3) about the charge production with photo-injectors (PHIN). He discussed the results of the evaluation by the EU referees. The participation of the involved laboratories was shown with special emphasis for the CTF3 photo-injector.
90% of the requested budget is now funded by the EU with funds available beginning of 2004. A set of project milestones was defined. PHIN makes it possible to build a photo-injector for CTF3 in collaboration with CNRS-Orsay and CCLRC-RAL in the time scale of three years. CERN contributes a total of 1448 k€ (mainly 4 man-years over 3 years), with 1162 k€ to be reimbursed by the CARE budget. In 2007, the CTF3 photo-injector should be operational.

Together with the 1.2 MSFr additional CERN funding granted by the DG for the 1.5 GHz broadband klystron, this opens the two options for the photo-injector and the thermionic injector with subharmonic buncher (SHB). The latter will be operational two years earlier than the photo-injector. Nevertheless, the photo-injector should be the more interesting long-term option for CLIC.
