Hans introduced Armen Apyan, a new CLIC study member
from North-western University. He will work on beam dynamics issues, starting
with CLIC turn-arounds.
Ian presented the recent discussions on a road map for CLIC to indicate the
status of our studies.
The first point was the publication of
CLIC note 561 "CLIC
activities and resources for the years 2003-2008" which explained what can
and cannot be achieved with present resources. A second point was a series
of "CLIC Road Map Meetings" which showed the need for a demonstration of
the novel CLIC RF power generation scheme. After discussion with the DG,
a list of crucial CLIC-technology related feasibility issues was established:
- Test of damped accelerating structure at design gradient and pulse
length
- Validation of drive beam generation scheme
- Design and test of damped ON/OFF power extraction structure
- Validation of stability and losses of drive beam decelerator, and design
of machine protection system
- Test of relevant linac sub-unit with beam
This list does not include items not CLIC-technology related or common to
any multi-TeV high luminosity machine.
In order to achieve the demonstration of the listed items, some crucial parts
of CTF3 are not funded, like the combiner ring, the CLIC experimental area
CLEX and the newly proposed drive beam test-line.
With the present resources, items 1.-3. (ILC-R1 rating) could be tested in
2010, with extra funding in 2007 (5.7 MCHF extra). The items 4.-5. (ILC-R2
rating) could have tests completed by 2013, with extra funds in 2009 (10.7
MCHF extra).
