CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research

Minutes of the CLIC Meeting - 31 October 2003

Agenda:
PTC upgrade path for MAD-X, PTC: A polymorphic tracking code based on the polymorphic library FPP
Speakers:
F. Schmidt, E. Forrest

Abstract (E. Forrest):
I will discuss what PTC is and, since I am here as part of the MAD-X effort, discuss how it fits inside the MAD-X project. More importantly, how it might redirect MAD-X into a new direction. In particular, I will introduce a series of mathematical, physical and software concepts which should be in the minds of individual people ideally and, at the very least, in the collective mind of the MAD-X developers here at CERN. These concepts will include: Vertical Integration rather Horizontal Integration, Taylor Polymorphism and Normal Forms, (Symplectic) Integrations and "Fibre Structures" rather than standard (deficient) beam line definitions. My talk should clarify why a whole collection of MAD8 modules are gone, and God willing, will never be seen again. As matter of fact, I even hope that many of the present modules will fall out like rotten apples.
