CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research

Minutes of the CLIC Meeting - 26 March 2004

Agenda: Overview and Status of the Proposal to the CERN council of an
Accelerated programme to demonstrate the key CLIC feasibility issues before 2010
Speakers: Ian Wilson, Jean-Pierre Delahaye

Ian presented the contents of the paper for an Accelerated programme to demonstrate the key CLIC feasibility issues before 2010, concentrating on the demonstration of the CLIC related feasibility issues. He gave a summary of the presently needed extra resources, the planning, and a list of the different work packages.

Jean-Pierre described the present outcome of his presentations of this programme to the SPC and Council. Both SPC and Council strongly support the programme with the proposed schedule.
In the SPC, there was a technical discussion with questions concerning the schedule, the accelerator structures, the use of a different frequency, the achievement of the small emittances and the cost of CLIC, etc. The SPC supported the many good arguments on the rich physics potential and re-expressed support for the acceleration of the feasibility demonstration.
In Council, the presentation was followed by a discussion concerning the position of CERN towards a future world-wide linear collider project. The International Linear Collider Steering Committee (ILC SC) has set up a task force to recommend a technology for a sub-TeV linear collider by the end of 2004. This choice being made, it is planned to set up a Global Design Organization (GDO) to complete the conceptual design report by 2005, the technical design report by 2007, leading to a site selection in 2008. Due to CERN's limited resources and priority of the LHC, CERN's present position is to leave the leading role to the US or Japan and not bid for hosting the Central Design Team of the GDO. A stronger future involvement could be possible once new resources will become available. In case no decision for a sub-TeV collider would be taken, the results of the Accelerated R&D for CLIC can be offered for world collaboration.
