CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research

Minutes of the CLIC Meeting - 7 January 2005

Agenda:
Review of the ILC Workshop, KEK, Nov. 13-15,
with summaries of the working groups
Speakers:
D.Schulte, E.Chiaveri

Hans presented three new colleagues: Raquel Fandos, Alberto Rodriguez (both in the RF group) and Carsten Welsch (BDI).

This meeting was the continuation of the CLIC meeting on 22 November 2004 about the ILC Workshop at KEK.
The web site http://lcdev.kek.jp/ILCWS/ gives all the details of the workshop.

The remaining working groups not presented before were:
 - WG1: Overall Design
 - WG5: High Gradient Cavities

Daniel presented the Overall Design WG discussions.
The physics requirements (2·1034 cm-2 s-1) are challenging.
The cost optimum has a relatively flat minimum for a gradient of 35-40 MV/m but only 25 MV/m has been demonstrated so far. Still some people aim at gradients above 40 MV/m.
Concerning commissioning and reliability, the issues of 1 vs. 2 tunnels and the damping ring were discussed. Then Daniel addressed instrumentation, beam dynamic issues and other points like upgrade scenarios.
The WG conclusion was to set up working groups for parameter ranges, construction schedule/commissioning/e+ source/tunnel configuration, low emittance transport and instrumentation.

Enrico summarized the discussions in the High Gradient Cavities WG.
He showed Q vs. Eacc results, stressing the importance of a high Q to keep the required cryogenic power low. He showed ideas of changing the cavity geometry to have a better ratio for Bpeak/Eacc to make a higher gradient possible.
He stated that the discussion was mainly concentrated on the cavities, couplers, tuners and other items were less covered. While some people push for industrialization, it seems that several years of R&D are still required.

The transparencies were taken from the WG5 Summary from the ILCWS web site.

Jean-Pierre announced that the ILCSC has confirmed the Snowmass meeting with accelerator specialists and physicists for August.
