Decision CELP Speech Coding using Squared and Perceptual Error

Abstract

In order to store and transmit speech (i.e. mobile telephony), it must be first sampled and then coded. It exists a comprise between the quality of the reconstructed signal at the other side of the phone communication, the amount of bits to transmit (bandwidth required) and the complexity of the coder (DSP feasibility).

In this master thesis, the largely used CELP coder (i.e. GSM) was first implemented. Afterwards, two different modifications were applied to it in order to study their influence in the performance. The first modification substituted the standard error criteria by an error criterion based on an existing auditory model (to take into account the error that the ear perceives, not the objective error). The second consisted of using tree coding techniques (to take into account the influence of the coding parameters of the current speech in the future coding).
