A new analytic approach for
analysing the dynamic behaviour of distributions of charged particles
in an electromagnetic field will be discussed.
After reviewing the limitations of including the radiation
self-reaction via the Lorentz-Dirac equation, a relativistic continuum
model of a collection of charged particles will be described and
methods explored for its analysis. This approach offers a systematic
method for the analysis of coherent radiation in complex devices
controlling charged particles in accelerators.
